Aulonocara ethelwynnae is found along the westcoast between Ngara and Chilumba in intermediate zones from rocks to sand, but mainly above the sandbottom near spread boulders. In the middle of 2017 I (Thimo) bought a group of this species, two males and four females, at that time they were about 5-6 cm. From these young fish the males are - in this moment (october 2018)- about 8 cm and the females are about 7 cm. The males have started to color yet. In my tank these fish love to stay at the edge of the rocky areas. It is an Aulonocaratype which is not able to match for the territorial behaviour of "mbuna" than other Aulonocara types so itīs not recommended to keep them together. Up till now the males are very tolerant against each other and their females, probably because they are very young. They are also very tolerant against the other inhabitants and they have also been accepted by the other fish in my tank. The pictures of this species are not all showing a full coloured male yet, we'll put more of them on this site in the future when one of them is completely coloured however that will take some time. This species is searching the sand for food and lives mainly of the invertebrates they find in the sand. They are quietly hanging above the sandbottom and "listen" to the sand. When they "hear" their prey, they take a big bite of sand and jig this sand through their gills so that the invertebrates stay in their mouth. It`s a quiet, peaceful cichlid which can be hold best with other quiet species. In the aquarium they are comfortable with any food. They take everything they get offered, like spirulina pellets, mysis, artemia, cyclops and shrimp-peas mix. |
